Robert Herjavec is a star of ABC’s “Shark Tank,” the CEO of cybersecurity firm Herjavec Group. The multi millionaire entrepreneur is one of North America’s most recognizable business leaders. Born in Eastern Europe, he arrived to North America on a boat with his parents after escaping Communism in the former Yugoslavia. From delivering newspapers, and waiting tables, to launching a computer company from his basement, his drive to achieve has led him to the fulfillment of a better life for himself and his family.
“I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I was a bit of a mess, partying, hanging out,” he says season 9 of “Shark Tank.” “People would say, ‘What do you want to do with your life?’ I’d go, ‘Ah, it doesn’t matter.’”
But at the age of 21, his father’s words gave him the drive that he needed to succeed.
“I went through hell so that you could have the opportunity I never had,” Herjavec’s father told him.
Since then Herjavec had an incredible sense of desperation that if he didn’t do something with his life all the sacrifice would go waste.
Robert shares 3 keys to getting ahead:
- Belief: “You have to believe you are going to be successful”. Do you know that only 1% of Americans make over 100 thousand dollars a year.So here’s the difference between belief & desire. When you hear a stat like that you think, wow only 1% ….there’s 99% of the people who aren’t..where I wanna be??? or When you really believe, you say,wow there’s 1%, that’s like 3 and a half billion people ,all I got to do is be the three and a half billion!
- Action: “You cannot do anything unless you take that belief into some type of action.” Its not just general & fluffy action. “I am in really good shape. But if you wanna run a marathon, you got to train in running. If you want to be successful in this, you got to train in that….” Robert says. It does not matter where you come from, its just that action that takes you long!
- Results:”You have got to have a purpose that’s greater than you.”Success does have a timeline after which you have to adjust.”You never stop going on the road to success but you have to be honest with yourself along that way and say is this working? coz the biggest lies you ever tell in life are the ones you tell yourself….,he continues.
Robert’s philosophy is that All the World Owes You Is An Opportunity.
To Robert, running a business is a lot like one of his greatest passions, racing cars. He believes, “You have to stay laser-focused when driving a car over 200 miles an hour, and the same approach is required when growing a business. You can’t look left or right, or you’ll crash. You must be honed in on the path forward”.
